Why go to Solvang?
Solvang was founded in 1911 by Danish-Americans who came west from Iowa, and it still leans all the way into its heritage: windmills, thatched roofs, bakeries and a walkable village center. According to the town's visitor bureau, more than a million people visit every year. It's also a great base for tasting rooms in the Santa Ynez Valley, the wine region made famous by the movie Sideways, which was filmed here.
Getting to Solvang from Santa Barbara
- By car: Solvang is about 35 miles from Santa Barbara, roughly an hour's drive in normal traffic. Most people take the scenic mountain route over San Marcos Pass (Highway 154) or stay on Highway 101 through Buellton.
- Parking: Good news, it's free everywhere in Solvang, including three public lots.
- Without a car: Public transit to the valley is limited, so a guided wine or food tour with pickup is the easiest option if you don't want to drive (or want to taste wine without worrying about the drive home).
Coming from LA? Solvang is about 125 miles from Los Angeles, so you can pair it with Santa Barbara on a weekend. See our Santa Barbara weekend itinerary.
What to do in Solvang
- Wander the village. The center is small and flat, so park once and walk. Look for the windmills, the storybook rooftops and the little courtyards between shops.
- Eat something Danish. Pastries are the classic move. An aebleskiver is a round Danish pancake puff, usually dusted with powdered sugar and served with jam.
- Visit Old Mission Santa Inés. Founded in 1804, the mission sits right at the edge of the village and gives a very different slice of California history than the Danish storefronts.
- Catch a show in summer. Solvang Theaterfest is a 700-seat outdoor theater, a fun way to end a warm day.
- Go wine tasting. There are tasting rooms in the village itself, and more in the nearby towns of the Santa Ynez Valley. Our Santa Barbara wine tasting guide explains how the region works.

A simple Solvang day plan
- Morning: Leave Santa Barbara by about 9 or 10 a.m. and take the scenic route over the pass.
- Late morning: Pastries and a coffee, then a slow loop around the village and the mission.
- Afternoon: Tasting rooms in Solvang or a nearby valley town (with a designated driver or a tour).
- Evening: Head back to Santa Barbara in time to catch the sunset.
