Santa Barbara Airbus shuttle
The Santa Barbara Airbus has been running scheduled shuttles between LAX and Santa Barbara for more than 40 years. It's the simplest way up the coast without a car: you board at the terminal, and someone else handles the 405 and the 101.
- Where to catch it at LAX: on the lower (arrivals) level, at the center island under the orange "Shared Rides" signs. The bus enters the airport at the published time and takes about 15 to 20 minutes to loop the terminals, so at Terminals 3 to 7 expect it 5 to 25 minutes after the listed time.
- Schedule: in October 2026 there were seven daily departures from LAX, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., plus a seasonal trip. Check the current Airbus schedule.
- Book ahead: prepaid fares need 48 hours' notice, and groups booked together pay less per person. Kids 2 and under ride free.
- Luggage: one bag and one carry-on are free. A second bag is $5 each way, and surfboards (up to 7 feet) or boxed bikes are $20. See fares and baggage fees.
- Where it drops you: Carpinteria, Santa Barbara (uptown at La Cumbre Plaza, 3845 State St.), and the Airbus headquarters in Goleta. The Santa Barbara stop isn't near the beach, so plan a short rideshare or bus ride to your hotel.
FlyAway bus + Amtrak Pacific Surfliner
This is the train-lover's route: a bus to downtown LA, then a scenic train ride up the coast, with stretches of the line running right along the ocean.
- LAX to Union Station: catch the LAX FlyAway bus on the lower (arrivals) level at the blue FlyAway columns. It's $12.75 one way, paid in the FlyAway app, online, or with a contactless card on board (no cash). There are no reservations. LAX estimates 30 to 60 minutes to Union Station, depending on traffic.
- Union Station to Santa Barbara: the FlyAway stops at the Patsaouras Transit Plaza on the east side of Union Station. Walk through the station to the trains. In the current timetable, six northbound Pacific Surfliner trains a day continue to Santa Barbara, and the ride takes about 2½ to 2¾ hours. Amtrak's Coast Starlight also stops in Santa Barbara.
- Leave a buffer. Freeway traffic can stretch the bus ride, so don't plan a tight connection. Check the Pacific Surfliner schedule before you land.
- Flexible tickets. An unreserved coach ticket lets you ride any Pacific Surfliner train between your two stations, which helps if your flight is late. See tickets and fares.
- You arrive downtown. The Santa Barbara station is at 209 State Street, two blocks from the beach, and that day's Amtrak ticket gets you free rides on local MTD buses.
Drive or rent a car
The usual route is the 405 north to the 101 north, which follows the coast for much of the way past Ventura. It's about 95 miles to downtown Santa Barbara.
- Timing matters most. In light traffic the drive is about 2 hours. Weekday rush hours on the 405 and the 101 can add a lot more. Check a navigation app before you leave LAX.
- Rental cars: follow the airport's signs to rental car pickup after baggage claim.
- Parking in town: the city's gated downtown lots give you the first 75 minutes free, then charge $3 an hour, up to $33 a day.
- Worth it if you plan to explore beyond downtown, like the Santa Ynez Valley wineries or the hiking trails.
Uber, Lyft, or taxi
Rideshare is door to door, which is handy late at night or with a group, but on a trip this long the fare adds up. Check the price in the app before you commit.
- Pickup at LAX: rideshare and taxi pickups are at the LAX-it lot next to Terminal 1. Walk there or take the free shuttle from the green LAX-it signs on the lower level.
- Request once you have your bags, and give the driver your exact Santa Barbara address so the long trip is priced correctly.
Skip LAX: fly into Santa Barbara (SBA)
If you haven't booked yet, check flights into Santa Barbara Airport first. In October 2026 it had about 28 daily nonstop flights to 13 destinations on Alaska, American, Delta, Southwest, and United, including hubs like Denver, Dallas-Fort Worth, Phoenix, Seattle, San Francisco, and Chicago. One connection gets you there from almost anywhere, and you land a short ride from town.
- When SBA beats LAX: when there's a nonstop from your home airport, when you'd otherwise rent a car just to make the drive, or when you land in LA at rush hour.
- Do the math: the airport's cost calculator compares SBA and LAX once you add parking, gas, and time.
- Already booked into LAX? United flies nonstop between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, so a short connecting flight is an option. See the full SBA flights list.
